Treatment Programs
Medical Detox
Medical detoxification at MTH Rehab is the critical first step toward lasting sobriety. Our 24/7 nursing and physician team monitors each patient's withdrawal symptoms using validated clinical scales, adjusting medication-assisted treatment protocols in real time to minimize discomfort and medical risk.
Detox typically lasts three to seven days depending on the substance and the severity of physical dependence. During this period, patients receive individualized pharmacological support, nutritional restoration, and round-the-clock emotional care. Our San Rafael facility is equipped with private and semi-private detox suites designed to feel more like a recovery residence than a clinical ward.
Because detox alone rarely produces sustained recovery, every patient begins working with a clinical counselor within the first 48 hours to develop a transition plan into residential or outpatient programming. This seamless handoff is one of the reasons our completion rates remain well above national averages.

Residential Treatment
Our residential treatment program immerses patients in a structured, community-driven recovery environment for 30 to 90 days. Every day at MTH Rehab begins with a morning community meeting where residents, peer mentors, and staff gather to set intentions, celebrate milestones, and hold space for honest conversation.
Each resident is paired with a trained peer mentor who has completed the program and understands the terrain of early recovery from personal experience. This mentorship bond often becomes one of the strongest supports patients carry into their post-treatment lives.
Clinical programming includes individual counseling sessions twice weekly, daily group therapy, family systems therapy sessions, and specialty tracks in psychodrama and creative arts. The evening house meeting closes each day with peer-led reflection and community accountability.
Our 49-bed facility offers semi-private rooms and shared suites, gourmet farm-to-table meals prepared on-site, and access to nature paths and recreational areas throughout the San Rafael campus. The residential experience is designed to feel like a supportive household, not an institution.

Outpatient Program
MTH Rehab's outpatient program provides a flexible yet clinically rigorous continuum of care for patients stepping down from residential treatment or for those whose circumstances allow them to recover while living at home in San Rafael and surrounding Marin County communities.
Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) meets three to five days per week for three-hour sessions that include group therapy, individual counseling, and relapse prevention education. Standard outpatient programming offers weekly individual sessions and biweekly group meetings for patients further along in their recovery.
Evening and weekend scheduling options ensure that work, school, and family responsibilities do not become barriers to continued care. Transportation coordination is available for patients traveling from Novato, San Anselmo, Mill Valley, and other nearby communities.
Dual Diagnosis
Nearly half of the patients who arrive at MTH Rehab are living with a co-occurring mental health condition alongside their substance use disorder. Our dual diagnosis program treats both conditions simultaneously rather than sequentially, because research consistently demonstrates that integrated care produces better long-term outcomes.
Board-certified psychiatrists conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations within the first 72 hours of admission. Treatment plans may include psychotropic medication management, trauma-focused EMDR sessions, cognitive behavioral therapy targeting both addiction and mood disorders, and family systems therapy to address relational dynamics that contribute to both conditions.
Common co-occurring conditions we treat include major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and personality disorders. Our clinical team collaborates daily to ensure that psychiatric and addiction care remain aligned throughout each patient's stay.
Treatment Modalities
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) — Identifies and restructures distorted thought patterns that drive compulsive substance use.
- Individual Counseling — One-on-one sessions with a licensed therapist to address personal history, triggers, and recovery goals.
- Group Therapy — Facilitated peer sessions that build accountability, empathy, and shared understanding among patients.
- Psychodrama — Experiential role-playing exercises that help patients process unresolved conflicts and practice new behavioral responses.
- Family Systems Therapy — Structured sessions that involve family members in the recovery process, repair communication breakdowns, and establish healthy boundaries.
- EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing) — Targets trauma memories stored in the nervous system to reduce their emotional charge and break the trauma-addiction cycle.
- Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP) — Combines meditation practices with cognitive strategies to strengthen awareness of cravings and build sustainable coping skills.
